Chiang Dao Hill Tribes

Day after day, packaged tourists are taken to the hills of Chiang Dao to visit the hill tribes out there. There are a number of them, and the Lisu are probably the most prevalent from what I saw. However, it is far more worthwhile to make the journey yourself. If you get an early start, you will be around far before the flocks of tourists arrive which gives a relaxed and more authentic experience. You can see these fine people engaged in their day to day lives, and it is surely worthwhile. Enjoy the day and go chat with these folks!
Local maps are available all over in Chaing Dao that are very well produced by the Cafe Cafe Coffee Shop in town for 20 baht. Looking on the map, it is a nice couple hours to head east on Soi 15 from downtown Chiang Dao. Once you cross the river, go right at the "T" when you get there. A few kilometers up the road will be a steep hill on your left. Turn left there, and proceed down the road. You will be able to find many hill tribes out there. There are signs in Thai indicating where you can turn off to head to some more remote villages. Experience drivers should explore some of these roads. Have fun!
