Chiang Dao Cave

This amazing and large cave is sure to impress all who make their way to Chaing Dao. This is arguably the single most visited attraction in the area. Cave enthusiasts and average travelers make the journey to see this amazingly large cave. The caves are a sprawling network inside of the mountain. There is a temple at the entrance of the caves, but it is average if anything. Before entering the cave complex itself, it is worthwhile to take a minute to view the crystal clear water in a pool at the base of the mountain. Inside the pool you will find a wide variety of fish. For a small donation, you are able to feed the fish in the pool. It is worth noting that these are some very strange fish. It is said that you should not feed fish too much, as they have will tend to continue eating to the point of death. These fish really seem uninterested in the food being offered to them by the many tourists that visit the cave each and every day. Anyway, it is still worth a look.

Entrance Fee: 20 baht for foreigners, 10 baht for Thais
Inside the Cave: When you first ascend the steps, you will see a few statues and a walkway to the main area. At this point, you will be informed that you need a guide. Without a doubt, you really do need one, as the complex itself is not lit. You will then be told that you need to pay 100 baht to rent the lantern. A guide will then proceed to take you and your party on a tour of the cave. They will inform you that they volunteer to do this, and they are not paid. The tip is entirely up to you. I visited with my Thai wife, and I was disappointed that our guide explained things very quickly in Thai. We felt rushed as well. Consequently, we gave him 100 baht for a tip. We felt that this was sufficient for the level of service we got. It is entirely up to you.
Warning: Inside the cave can be a dangerous place. The guide is likely to lead you an area in the cave that is on a cliff that goes down 30 meters. Of course, you are not likely to be advised of this until you get there. The left side of the walkway leading there is also a large cliff. Unless you have night vision or something, it is unlikely that you will be able to see this using only the dimly lit lantern. Use caution, as the floors are wet and slippery. You may wish to wear shoes with solid footing. Also, be advised that you must crawl at various points, and it is very easy to get scraped up if you are not careful. Use your judgement.

Photos: I literally have hundreds of pictures. Here I will select the best ones. Click on an image to see it larger and take a photo tour of the cave. Navigation options will be presented in a new window.
